Mid-Week Blog: 4 Great Podcasts for Writers (and 1 Bonus)

Podcasts are a great way to find inspiration, learn about craft, or get to know fellow writers and how they get it done.

For the past several years, I've been listening to many of them, but here are the top four that I listen to religiously.

In no particular order:

1.  The Self-Publishing Podcast

I've been listening to this podcast the longest and while the hosts write in a different genre from mine, I've learned plenty from Johnny, Sean and Dave. They discuss the tools they use, story beats, publishing options. They conduct interviews with authors, agents, and the "gatekeepers in traditional publishing." Most recently, they launched Sterling & Stone. Sterling & Stone is a story studio, where the Self-Publishing Podcast and other podcasts they host are housed. Just yesterday I listened to their most recent podcast entitled "How to Get Past That Crucial First Scene" where they offer some great examples of first scenes in movies.

2.  Smart Podcast, Trashy Books

From the Smart Bitches, Trashy Books site, this podcast hosted by Sarah Wendell consists of interviews with romance/erotica authors and the other "bitches" who write for this sassy website. I can't tell you how many times I have listened to this podcast, heard them fawn all over a novel, and immediately bought that book (Amazon Prime, you are my bitch). The gals discuss craft and conferences they've attended, their favorite books and authors, and they seem to have a delicious time doing so.

3. The Creative Penn Podcast

I can't remember how I came across Joanna Penn's site but I am so glad I did. I thoroughly enjoy her refreshing, and British, voice on the subject of writing. Joanna is a best selling author who conducts interviews and discusses topics such as promoting your book, how to sell 2 million copies, tips for writing fast, and much, much more.

4.  Story Grid Podcast

This podcast is a great addition to the book "The Story Grid" by Shawn Coyne. The story grid is a great tool to help writers outline their novel. The podcast is hosted by Tim Grahl, a writer struggling with his novel. Shawn helps Tim work through the different steps in creating a story. The website includes resources any writer can use along with examples.

BONUS: Hollywood Babylon

My absolute favorite podcast is Hollywood Babylon. While this pop culture podcast doesn't really talk about writing or the craft, or interview authors, it is hosted by Kevin Smith. Every week, on Hollywood Babylon, Kevin and co-host Ralph Garman poke fun at celebrities, movies, tv shows, audience members, each other, and offer a hilarious look at Hollywood. I never miss a show. Smith is one of my favorite storytellers. He's up there with Tarantino and Scorsese. His movies, while not box-office smash material are brilliant. Yes, he did the classic Clerks, but my favorites by far are Dogma and Red State. I simply adore Kevin for his brain, his brilliant writing, and his self-deprecating personality.
