Spooky Movie Review: Terrifier (2016)

As mentioned, it takes a lot to disturb me when it comes to horror movies, but if you know me, I’m not the biggest fan of clowns!

Terrifier (2016) is easily one of the most unsettling and grotesque horror movies I’ve ever watched. Directed by Damien Leone, this indie slasher introduces Art the Clown, a silent but deeply menacing killer whose expressionless, painted face and gleeful violence make him one of the most terrifying horror villains in recent memory.

From the moment Art appears on screen, the film dives into a dark, gore-filled nightmare. There’s no complex storyline or backstory to soften the blow; it’s just Art stalking and brutally killing his victims on Halloween night. What sets Terrifier apart from other slasher films is its unapologetic focus on shock and horror. It doesn’t hold back on the gore or disturbing imagery—this is a film that revels in the extreme.

One of the most iconic (and disturbing) scenes involves a graphic, drawn-out kill that truly tests the viewer’s limits. The cruelty and sadism Art inflicts are horrifying, and his ability to switch between creepy, silent stares and savage violence makes the character even more chilling.

Art’s refusal to speak only adds to the eerie atmosphere, and the film’s practical effects deliver a visceral, gritty feel. Though the plot is simple, it doesn’t detract from the film's main goal—to scare and disturb. The minimalist dialogue and relentless pace make the experience feel claustrophobic and anxiety-inducing.

For fans of extreme horror, Terrifier is a disturbing ride, and it’s not for the faint of heart. It’s creepy, gruesome, and stays with you long after the credits roll. If you can stomach it, it’s a must-watch for those seeking a truly terrifying experience. But beware, this one pushes the boundaries of what most viewers can handle.

Update: I forgot to give my rating (1 bat being "meh" and 5 bats being "I can’t sleep tonight"). While it was totally disturbing, I still give it 1 bat!
