Monthly Blog: 20 Years, 2 Decades, 10 Bienniums, 4 Lustrums

A funny thing happened on the way to my hubby and I celebrating our anniversary this Wednesday.

We blinked, and here we are, 20 years later.

Damn.

So much has happened in those 20 years and yet it seems like we've lived them at an astonishing speed.

No matter how you slice it...breaking it into smaller chunks, thinking about it in terms of "first dating" or "while we were engaged," "after the wedding" or "when we bought our house," time is a funny thing. When I think of all the big things that have happened, all the little things in between, they're like blips on the radar.

It all started with a video store (where he worked), followed by a concert at the Abbey Pub (that I invited him to and may still be reeling over the fact he showed up).

Since then, there are the trips we've taken, the jobs we've had and left. The decisions, celebrations, and numerous hours watching Scarface or Heat, or talking about our weird obsession with Al Pacino. All the concerts we've seen...maybe hundreds. The pizzas we've eaten...way more than that. Moments that filled up almost half of my lifetime.

All of these little events and life challenges and victories, in what seems to be a short amount of time.

To have a partner, who accepts you for not only who you are, but "how" you are, is a gift. I have my ways, I know this, and my hubby lets me thrive in my idiosyncrasies. Even when he pokes fun at the way I alphabetize the spice drawer, or have "places" for items that don't make much sense, he knows this is how I am and accepts it.

If you click on the lyrics below, you'll link to one of my favorite songs by Ben Folds called "The Luckiest." I have about a dozen other songs I could post but this one seems the most fitting, because I am the luckiest, and have been for 20 years.

I don't get many things right the first time,
In fact, I am told that a lot
Now I know all the wrong turns the stumbles,
And falls brought me here
And where was I before the day
That I first saw your lovely face,
Now I see it every day
And I know

That I am, I am, I am, the luckiest
